Does the system notify me of unusual water flow events?
Yes. Persistent low-flow and high-flow events are flagged by the system and communicated to designated recipients.
To receive notifications ensure that your latest contact details are given to your Building Manager or Managing Agent who will forward this to our support desk.
Does an alert email mean there is definitely a problem?
The notification indicates that there may be an issue, but does not claim that there is in fact an issue. Use the AMIplus app to check and monitor consumption.
What are possible causes of a water usage event notification?
There are various reasons why your meter may generate water usage alerts. These include a possible problem with the hot water cylinder (geyser) or one of its components, a constantly running toilet (stuck toilet mechanism), dripping taps, pin-holes in the piping in the wall, etc.
Water wastage events can occur when no one is at home, or at night when everyone is asleep, and are not always evident as visible wet patches on walls or floors.
Should I respond to the usage graph emails I receive?
No, don’t respond to these emails – they are sent from an unattended mailbox which isn’t monitored and you therefore won’t receive a response.
Who owns the utility meters at my scheme?
These are generally owned by the Body Corporate or the owner of the premises. AMI does not own the meters.
Who is responsible for investigating an unusual flow event?
System-generated notifications are a value-add service, and it is your responsibility to use these to investigate any potential issues.
Can my high consumption be due to a faulty meter?
While not impossible, our experience has shown that high consumption is unlikely to be due to a meter fault. It is most often due to consumption patterns or faulty infrastructure.
Can a hot water cylinder cause a high usage alert?
Yes – a hot water cylinder (geyser) will vent water periodically where pressure builds up due to sustained and excessive heating of the water. The TP valve is a safety mechanism installed with all modern hot water cylinders, designed to release water to reduce the pressure.
What is a TP valve?
Temperature and Pressure Relief Valves, also called TP valves, are emergency safety limit devices that will prevent or relieve overheated water and pressure.
Is an electrical plug-point required to provide power to the water meter?
No – most of our meters have a lithium-ion battery with excellent battery life (up to 16 years). It doesn’t require a connection to the power grid and will continue collecting data even during power outages.
